FOR PROVISIONAL REGISTRATION: 19 April, 2004. The KnowledgeWeb European
Network of Excellence
(http://knowledgeweb.semanticweb.org/) is pleased to announce the
second European Summer School on Ontological Engineering and the
Semantic Web. This summer school, presented by leading researchers in
the field, is the successor to the highly successful school held in
2003 as part of the activities of the OntoWeb Network Consortium
(http://www.ontoweb.org). The school represents an opportunity for
postgraduate students to equip themselves with the range of theoretical
and practical skills necessary for full engagement with the challenges
involved in developing Ontologies and Semantic Web applications.
Students interested in taking part will have to register
online on the SSSW-04 web site by April 19th. Attendance at the school
will be limited to 50 participants, therefore registration does not
guarantee a place at the school if the school is over-subscribed. To
register please fill the online form at our web site,

ESWS 2004 1st European Semantic Web Symposium
|
In
the European context, the 6th framework programme has demonstrated the
EU’s commitment to this technology area and a number of exciting new
projects in the Semantic Web area have been launched, aggregated in the
SDK project cluster - see http://www.sdk-cluster.org/ for further
details. A tutorial programme, based around these projects, offers the
opportunity to get up to speed with European and global developments in
this exciting new area. All 6th framework projects, as well as other
leading projects, in the Semantic Web area will be represented with
posters. The conference will be co-located with the OntoWeb thematic
network seminar and the Knowledge Web network of excellence meeting –
see http://www.ontoweb.org/ and http://knowledgeweb.semanticweb.org/
for further details of OntoWeb and Knowledge Web events,
respectively. Heraklion, Greece

KTWeb Workshop
|
KTweb Workshop: Knowledge and content technology research - the past
and the future 2 - 3 December 2003, European Commission, Luxembourg
HIGHLIGHTS: Keynote addresses by leading industry players, from NOKIA
and VERIZON; details of the plans for future research opportunities
in the Sixth Framework Programme; plus project presentations and case
studies; together with parallel demonstrations and poster session.
This KTweb* Workshop is organised in conjunction with unit E2,
Knowledge Management and Content Creation, at the European Commission
in Luxembourg on December 2nd and 3rd 2003. Attendance is free of
charge. The first day presents a retrospective view on knowledge and
content technology research undertaken under the Commission's Fifth
Framework Programme (FP5), showcasing selected projects from Unit E2,
together with case studies from FP5 and from other research
programmes where there has been a successful commercial take-up of
the research results. The second day will look ahead to future
research, with a preview of some of the new Sixth Framework Programme
(FP6) projects together with information on the 2004-2005 Work
Programme. There will be speakers from the European Commission, the
research community, and from industry. There will be ample time for
informal discussion and 'networking', as well as parallel project
demonstrations and poster sessions.
The programme, online registration facilities and travel and
accommodation details are available on the KTweb portal at
http://www.ktweb.org/wsDec03.cfm
*KTweb is the key initiative of the MULTIPLE project, an Accompanying
Measure to the European Commission's Information Society Technologies
(IST) programme, aiming to provide a broad-based community-building
and awareness-raising service for digital content, media and
knowledge technologies. KTweb brings together the European projects
and people working in these technologies - in research, academia and
business - and offers information and resources at a global level. Luxembourg

Practical and Scalable Semantic Systems
|
The
Semantic Web is widely accepted as a means to enhance the Web with
machine processable content. For making the Semantic Web work in
practice it is paramount to be able to use the existing infrastructure,
and to enable an evolutionary transition from today’s infrastructure
towards a connected web using Semantic Web technologies. Making
Semantic Web technology practical has two facets:
Making existing technologies work: often useful tricks of the trade are
required to make existing systems work with Semantic Web technology.
Examples include various mappings of semi-structured data on relational
databases or the realization of ontology languages for relational,
object-relational, and object-oriented databases. Only these “tricks of
the trade” enable to spread Semantic Web technology. Identifying
different research assumptions: the existing research in databases is
often based on slightly different assumptions than required by Semantic
Web technologies. Existing research on semi-structured data storage and
retrieval does not take into account that stored data might have
heterogeneous semantics, e.g., based on different ontology languages.
Based on the identification of different assumptions, new research
tasks, based on existing database research, can be identified. Both
aspects are critical for the success of the Semantic Web – the first
aspect provides necessary solutions for how to make the Semantic Web
practical right now, whereas the second aspect indicate the long term
research by identifying the different assumptions behind past database
research and current Semantic Web needs, and how to bridge the gap
between both fields. The workshop provides a forum for both aspects,
which did not exist yet.

ever more complex technical world. The scope for submissions of
original results has extended from all technical aspects of data
management to the infrastructures of which databases have become an
essential part, and to applications which heavily depend on database
technology. We invite submission of technical papers, papers with
visionary contributions, proposals for panels, tutorials, and
demonstrations, all of which present the most critical issues and views
on practical leading-edge database technology, applications, and
techniques. Paper Deadline: February 8th Berlin, Germany

The
Web presents a key driving force for a large spectrum of applications
in which a user interacts with a company, a governmental authority, a

application providers should combine knowledge about user expectations
and Web semantics, in order to form personalised, user-friendly, and
business-optimal services. Enabling methodologies include data mining,
text mining, and ontology learning. Recipient technologies include user
